Can You Reuse Reed Diffuser Reeds?

Epsilon Home reed diffuser with refill and fresh fibre reeds

When your reed diffuser runs out, it can be tempting to simply refill the bottle and put the old reeds straight back in.

While you could physically reuse them, we don't recommend reusing diffuser reeds when refilling. Fresh reeds give your new fragrance the best opportunity to travel through the fibres and disperse effectively into your room.

Why Should You Replace Your Diffuser Reeds?

Over time, diffuser reeds continuously absorb and disperse fragrance. They can also collect dust and other particles from the surrounding environment.

Even if old reeds look perfectly usable, fresh reeds provide a clean start when you refill your diffuser. That's why we always recommend replacing them rather than trying to extend their use indefinitely.

Should You Reuse Reeds With The Same Fragrance?

We still recommend replacing them.

Even if you're refilling with exactly the same fragrance, the existing reeds have already spent months absorbing and dispersing diffuser oil. Fresh oil deserves fresh reeds to give your refill the best chance of performing as intended.

This isn't unusual advice: other refill manufacturers similarly recommend fresh reeds with each refill for effective diffusion.

What if you're changing to a different fragrance?

Fresh reeds become even more important when changing fragrance.

Previously used reeds already contain the old scent, so putting them into a different fragrance can affect how the new scent smells while the remaining oil works its way through the reed.

For the cleanest fragrance experience, use fresh reeds whenever you change scent.

Can you wash and reuse diffuser reeds?

Although you'll find advice online about washing or soaking old diffuser reeds, there's no real advantage when fresh replacements are available. Water, cleaning products or another liquid can also introduce something into the reed that wasn't part of the original diffuser formulation.

Instead, replace the used reeds and start again with a fresh set.

This is an area where online advice varies, reinforcing why I wouldn't make complicated cleaning instructions part of our guide

Why does Epsilon Home use fibre reeds?

We use fibre reeds because we've found they provide reliable and consistent fragrance delivery.

Unlike traditional rattan reeds, which rely on naturally occurring channels within the material, fibre reeds are manufactured specifically to wick and disperse fragrance consistently.

The reeds are an important part of the diffuser system — not simply a decorative accessory.

Our refills include replacement reeds for two refills of your 100ml diffuser

Do Epsilon refills include replacement reeds?

Yes — and this is deliberately part of the refill system.

Our 200 ml diffuser refills provide enough fragrance for two 100 ml refills, and we include enough fresh fibre reeds for both.

That means when it's time for your second refill, you don't need to reuse the reeds from the first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you reuse reed diffuser reeds with a refill?

You can physically reuse them, but we don't recommend it. Fresh reeds give the refill a clean start and help the fragrance disperse effectively.

Can you wash reed diffuser reeds and reuse them?

We don't recommend washing used diffuser reeds. Starting with fresh reeds is simpler and avoids introducing water or cleaning products into your diffuser system.

Can I reuse reeds with a different fragrance?

We wouldn't recommend it. Used reeds retain the previous fragrance, which can interfere with the scent of your new diffuser oil. Use fresh reeds when changing fragrance.

Do I need new reeds if I'm using the same fragrance?

We still recommend fresh reeds. The existing reeds have already spent the life of your original diffuser absorbing and dispersing fragrance.

How often should diffuser reeds be replaced?

For Epsilon diffusers, we'd normally expect the reeds to last for the life of the original diffuser. Replace them when refilling, or sooner if they become particularly dusty or their performance noticeably deteriorates.

Do reed diffuser refills come with new reeds?

Epsilon Home's 200 ml diffuser refills include enough fresh fibre reeds for both 100 ml refills, so there's no need to reuse your old ones.
