Can You Change The Fragrance In A Reed Diffuser?

Epsilon Home reed diffuser with different fragrance refill options

Yes, you can change the fragrance in a reed diffuser, making your existing bottle a great way to discover something new without replacing the entire diffuser.

For the best results, finish the existing fragrance first, clean the bottle thoroughly and allow it to dry completely before adding your new fragrance and fresh reeds.

Can you put a different fragrance in the same diffuser?

Yes. A suitable glass reed diffuser bottle can be cleaned and refilled with a completely different fragrance.

However, we wouldn't recommend simply pouring the new scent on top of the old one. The remaining fragrance can mix with your new choice and change how it smells.

Ideally, enjoy your existing fragrance until the bottle is empty before changing scent.

Should you clean the bottle when changing fragrance?

Yes. When switching to a different scent, we'd recommend cleaning the diffuser bottle first to remove as much of the previous fragrance as possible.

At Epsilon Home, we'd soak the empty glass bottle in warm soapy water, before rinsing it thoroughly several times with warm-to-hot water.

If the glass remains particularly cloudy or oily, a small amount of isopropyl alcohol can help remove stubborn residue. The bottle should then be rinsed thoroughly again.

Make sure the bottle is completely dry

This step is easy to overlook.

After cleaning, place the bottle upside down and allow it to dry thoroughly — ideally overnight. Any remaining condensation should be allowed to disappear before adding your new diffuser oil.

Oil and water don't mix, so introducing a new refill while moisture remains inside the bottle isn't something we'd recommend.

Gentle warmth can help remove the final traces of condensation, but avoid exposing the glass to excessive or sudden heat.

Always use fresh reeds with your new fragrance

Changing fragrance isn't just about changing the oil.

Previously used reeds will already contain your old fragrance. Putting them into your new scent can carry traces of the previous fragrance across and affect how the new fragrance initially smells.

For the cleanest changeover, start your new fragrance with fresh fibre reeds.

What if there's fragrance left in the bottle?

There's no need to throw away perfectly usable fragrance simply because you fancy a change.

Ideally, continue using your diffuser until the existing fragrance is finished. You can then clean the bottle and introduce your new scent.

If you do need to dispose of unwanted diffuser oil, do not pour it down household drains. Small amounts can be absorbed using a suitable absorbent material and should be disposed of responsibly in accordance with your local waste disposal regulations.

Fresh reeds become even more important when changing fragrance.

Previously used reeds already contain the old scent, so putting them into a different fragrance can affect how the new scent smells while the remaining oil works its way through the reed.

For the cleanest fragrance experience, use fresh reeds whenever you change scent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put a different fragrance in my reed diffuser?

Yes. Once the previous fragrance has finished, clean and completely dry the diffuser bottle before adding your new fragrance and fresh reeds.

Do I need to clean my diffuser if I'm using the same fragrance?

If you're simply topping up with exactly the same fragrance, a complete clean isn't normally necessary. We'd still recommend using fresh reeds when carrying out a full refill.

Do I need new reeds when changing diffuser fragrance?

Yes. Used reeds retain the previous fragrance, so we recommend using fresh reeds whenever you change to a different scent.

Can I mix two reed diffuser fragrances together?

We don't recommend mixing different fragrances. Each fragrance has been designed with its own scent profile, and combining leftover oil with another refill can produce an unpredictable result.

How do I clean a diffuser before changing fragrance?

Soak the empty glass bottle in warm soapy water before rinsing thoroughly several times. Allow it to dry upside down overnight and make sure the bottle is completely dry before refilling.

What should I do with leftover diffuser oil?

Ideally, continue enjoying it until the diffuser is empty. If disposal is necessary, don't pour diffuser oil down household drains. Absorb small quantities with a suitable absorbent material and dispose of them responsibly in accordance with your local waste disposal regulations.
